Three Days in Duisburg

Three days are enough to experience Duisburg in all its breadth. Day one belongs to the water and the art around the Inner Harbour. Day two dives into industrial heritage — Landscape Park North, blast furnaces and the Industrial Heritage Trail. Day three combines family and nature with the zoo, the Six Lakes and a walk along the Rhine. Evenings are relaxed at the harbour or in Ruhrort.

Best time to visit: May to September — lakes, the Rhine and the Landscape Park are at their best then

Three Days in Duisburg

Day 1

Day 1 — Inner Harbour, art and the old town

The first day links the central landmarks: Inner Harbour, MKM, Lehmbruck Museum and the old town. We stay close to the water and finish at the harbour.

  1. 9:30 - 11:00

    Inner Harbour walk

Start at the Inner Harbour, the converted grain port with marina, warehouses and promenade. Foster's architecture and the Garden of Remembrance open the day.

  2. 11:00 - 12:30

    MKM Kueppersmuehle museum

Modern art after 1945 in a former mill, rebuilt by Herzog & de Meuron. Beck, Baselitz, Richter — and an architectural experience in its own right.

  3. 12:30 - 13:45

    Lunch at the harbour

The restaurants along the harbour promenade offer everything from tarte flambee to hearty regional fare — with a view of the water.

  4. 14:00 - 15:30

    Lehmbruck Museum

The Lehmbruck Museum in the Kantpark is one of Europe's most important sculpture museums, dedicated to the Duisburg sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Inside and in the park stand works by Lehmbruck, Rodin and Beuys.

  5. 16:00 - 17:30

Old town and St Saviour's Church

St Saviour's Church, the town hall, the historic Dreigiebelhaus and Koenigstrasse — Duisburg's historic core with the legacy of Gerardus Mercator.

  6. 19:00 - 21:30

    Evening at the Inner Harbour

Restaurants and bars by the water invite you for the first evening. Harbour atmosphere and short distances to all the hotels in the city.

  7. Uebernachtung

    Stay in the city centre

Central location in the Mitte district with short distances to the main station and Inner Harbour — ideal for the next two days.

Day 2

Day 2 — industrial heritage and Ruhrort

Today we head to the heart of the industrial heritage: Landscape Park Duisburg-North. In the afternoon, harbour romance in Ruhrort with the inland navigation museum.

  1. 9:30 - 12:30

    Landscape Park Duisburg-North

The decommissioned Meiderich ironworks is now one of the most spectacular industrial parks in the world. Blast Furnace 5 is walkable and offers a panorama, a club dives in the old gasometer, and nature has reclaimed the site everywhere.

Tip: The park is freely accessible around the clock — bring sturdy shoes for the climb up Blast Furnace 5.

  2. 12:45 - 14:00

    Lunch in Meiderich

Around the Landscape Park there are down-to-earth eateries and the park catering — Ruhr-region cuisine among blast furnaces.

  3. 14:30 - 16:00

    German Inland Navigation Museum

In Ruhrort, Europe's largest inland port, the museum housed in a historic Art Nouveau swimming hall tells the story of shipping on the Rhine and Ruhr. Original ships included.

  4. 16:00 - 17:30

    Historic harbour of Ruhrort

A stroll through the Ruhrort harbour quarter with its captains' houses, the historic harbour basin and a view of the bustling duisport — the largest inland port in the world.

  5. 19:00 - 21:30

    Evening in Ruhrort

Ruhrort has turned into a trendy quarter: pubs, bistros and a maritime flair make the evening an experience. The TV detective 'Schimanski' was once filmed here.

  6. Uebernachtung

    Stay in the city centre

Back to the centrally located hotels in Mitte — short distances for the final day.

Day 3

Day 3 — zoo, lakes and the Rhine

The final day combines family and nature: the zoo at the Kaiserberg, the Six Lakes for walking and the Rhine Park to wind down.

  1. 9:30 - 12:30

    Duisburg Zoo

The zoo at the Kaiserberg is known for its dolphinarium and its koalas — it was the first zoo in Europe to keep koalas. Plus monkey worlds, a walk-through aquarium and plenty of space for a relaxed morning.

Tip: The A3 motorway runs right through the zoo — a bridge connects the two halves.

  2. 12:45 - 14:00

    Lunch in Neudorf

The student quarter of Neudorf around the university offers a colourful, affordable dining scene — from falafel to pasta.

  3. 14:30 - 16:30

    The Six Lakes

Former gravel pits became Duisburg's largest recreation area: six interconnected lakes with hiking trails, lidos and sailing boats. A loop around the Masurensee is the perfect afternoon.

  4. 17:00 - 18:30

    Rhine Park Hochfeld

On a former industrial site right by the Rhine, the Rhine Park was created with a broad meadow, a skate facility and a riverside promenade. Ideal for sunset over the river.

  5. 19:00 - 21:00

    Farewell dinner by the water

To finish, back to the Inner Harbour or the Rhine — one last taste of Ruhr-region hospitality by the water.
