Duisburg in One Day
If you only have one day in Duisburg, you should experience both sides of the city: the revived waterfront and the industrial heritage. We start at the Inner Harbor, the old grain-store quarter redesigned by Lord Norman Foster, visit the MKM Küppersmühle museum, stroll through the old town to St Saviour's Church and head out in the afternoon to the walkable rollercoaster sculpture Tiger & Turtle. We let the evening wind down by the water.
Best time to visit: April to October - the Inner Harbor is at its best then

Day 1
The highlights in one day
We start at the Inner Harbor, visit the MKM, have lunch in the old town and finish with Tiger & Turtle and an evening by the water.
- 9:30 - 11:00
Discover the Inner Harbor
The Inner Harbor was once Duisburg's grain port, the 'breadbasket of the Ruhr'. Today the quarter, designed by Lord Norman Foster, is a promenade of brick warehouses, a marina, office buildings and restaurants. A perfect start between water and industrial history.
Tip: Come early - in the morning the harbor basin is often mirror-still, ideal for photos.
- 11:00 - 12:30
MKM Küppersmühle museum
The former grain mill on the Inner Harbor now holds one of the most important collections of German art after 1945. The warehouse, rebuilt by Herzog & de Meuron, is an architectural experience in itself - the old silo towers included.
- 12:45 - 14:00
Lunch in the old town
Around Königstraße and the old town there are cozy spots with Ruhr-region cuisine and international variety. Currywurst, hearty regional fare or a light lunch - everything is close together.
- 14:00 - 15:00
St Saviour's Church and the old town
The late-Gothic St Saviour's Church (Salvatorkirche) next to the town hall is Duisburg's oldest church and the final resting place of the cartographer Gerardus Mercator. Around it lies the historic old town with the Dreigiebelhaus.
- 15:30 - 17:00
Tiger & Turtle in the Angerpark
The walkable rollercoaster sculpture on the Heinrich Hildebrand Height is Duisburg's new landmark. 220 meters of steel, walkable via stairs, with loops (which you cannot walk through) and a wide view over the Ruhr region to the skyline.
Tip: Especially beautiful at sunset - the sculpture is lit in the evening.
- 19:00 - 21:30
Evening at the Inner Harbor
Back at the Inner Harbor, restaurants, bars and beer gardens line the water. From an upscale venue to a relaxed harbor pub - the ideal end to a day in Duisburg.
