Duisburg with Kids

Duisburg is surprisingly family-friendly. The zoo with its dolphinarium and koalas is a classic, the walkable rollercoaster sculpture Tiger & Turtle fascinates young and old, and Landscape Park North is a huge industrial adventure playground. In between lie lidos and meadows at the Six Lakes. We plan the day so that the distances are short and the breaks child-friendly.

Best time to visit: May to September — in dry weather the day is best spent outdoors

Day 1

A day for the whole family

We start at the zoo, have a child-friendly lunch, climb Tiger & Turtle in the afternoon and finish by the water at the Six Lakes.

  1. 9:30 - 13:00

    Duisburg Zoo

    Dolphin shows, koalas, the walk-through aquarium and the petting zoo — the zoo at the Kaiserberg is a full morning for children. Allow enough time; the grounds are large and span both sides of the A3.

    Tip: Check the times of the dolphin and sea-lion shows at the entrance and plan the morning around them.

  2. 13:00 - 14:00

    Lunch at the zoo or in Neudorf

    The zoo catering offers child-friendly classics. If you prefer to head out, nearby Neudorf has many easy-going eateries.

  3. 14:30 - 16:00

    Climb Tiger & Turtle

    The walkable rollercoaster on the slag heap in the Angerpark is an adventure: more than 200 steps lead up along the steel rail. At the top, a great view and the feeling of standing in a real rollercoaster.

    Tip: Hold small children's hands — the stairs are steep and the looping section is closed off.

  4. 16:30 - 18:30

    The Six Lakes

    To wind down, to the lakes: playgrounds, a lido, pedal boats and broad meadows to run around. In summer the beach sections invite paddling.

  5. 18:30 - 20:00

    Family evening by the lake or harbour

    Pizza, pasta or fries with a view — around the lakes and at the Inner Harbour there are relaxed, family-friendly venues.
