Duisburg in the Rain
Bad weather is no reason to be glum in Duisburg — the city has a remarkable density of museums. The MKM in the Kueppersmuehle shows post-war German art, the Lehmbruck Museum European sculpture, the inland navigation museum the history of river shipping, and the cultural and city history museum the legacy of Gerardus Mercator. In between, a cafe warms you up and the Forum offers dry shopping.
Best time to visit: Year-round — the ideal plan for grey and wet days
Day 1
A day staying dry through Duisburg
We spend the day largely under cover: from the MKM via the Lehmbruck Museum to the Mercator legacy and a wander through the Forum.
- 10:00 - 11:30
MKM Kueppersmuehle museum
The classic for rainy days: modern art after 1945 in the converted grain store right on the Inner Harbour. The architecture by Herzog & de Meuron alone makes the visit worthwhile.
- 11:45 - 13:00
Lehmbruck Museum
In the Kantpark, the Lehmbruck Museum shows sculpture of world rank. Glass architecture, plenty of light and works by Lehmbruck, Rodin and Beuys — a quiet place, especially in the rain.
- 13:00 - 14:15
Lunch in the city
Around Koenigstrasse and the Forum there are numerous covered dining options — ideal for staying dry.
- 14:30 - 15:45
Cultural and City History Museum
Here the legacy of Gerardus Mercator lives on: globes, historic maps and the city history of Duisburg from the Roman camp to the industrial city. A must for Mercator fans.
- 16:00 - 17:30
German Inland Navigation Museum
In the Art Nouveau swimming hall in Ruhrort you dive, dry-footed, into the world of river shipping. Original ships, models and the impressive baths ambience.
- 18:00 - 19:30
Shopping at the Forum
The Forum on Koenigstrasse is Duisburg's large covered shopping centre — perfect for sitting out the last raindrops and finding a souvenir.
- 19:30 - 21:30
Cosy evening in the city
To finish, a warm meal in one of the restaurants in the city centre — dry, cosy and central.
