Duisburg for Foodies
Duisburg eats colourfully. The industrial city has one of the most varied food cultures in the Ruhr region — from down-to-earth regional fare and the legendary currywurst via the Turkish and Arab cuisine in Marxloh and Hochfeld to the upscale harbour dining at the Inner Harbour. This tour eats its way right across the city and its immigration history.
Best time to visit: Year-round — Duisburg eats well in any weather
Day 1
A culinary journey through Duisburg
We eat our way through the city: fresh market produce in the morning, a multicultural lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon and an evening in the Ruhrort scene.
- 9:30 - 11:00
Farmers' market and breakfast in the city
Start with a stroll through one of Duisburg's weekly markets and breakfast in the city centre — regional, fresh and uncomplicated into the day.
- 11:30 - 13:30
Multicultural cuisine in Hochfeld
Hochfeld is one of the most diverse districts of Duisburg. Here Turkish bakeries, Arab snack bars and restaurants from all over the world line up — the authentic, international lunch.
Tip: A fresh pide or a lahmacun straight from the stone oven is a must here.
- 14:00 - 15:00
Currywurst break
No Ruhr-region tour without currywurst. At one of the traditional kiosks you get the red-and-white speciality, fittingly, with fries — regional fare to take away.
- 15:30 - 16:30
Coffee and cake at the harbour
A coffee break at the Inner Harbour with a view of the water. The cafes along the promenade offer homemade cake and a relaxed harbour atmosphere.
- 18:30 - 21:30
Evening in the Ruhrort scene
The finale is an evening in the trendy quarter of Ruhrort. Among captains' houses and harbour pubs, creative cuisine, wine bars and maritime flair come together.
